BEGINNINGS

In June 2019, Garrett and Gabi Raburn drove into New York City with everything they owned in a moving truck. By the end of that summer, they’d met a handful people from Brooklyn and Manhattan who were excited about the vision for a new church. Weekly house church and community groups started in Brooklyn, and the foundation of the church was set.

CRISIS

The Covid-19 pandemic devastated New York City. One sector of society after another shut down as New York emerged as an early epicenter. Our church found individuals, families, and organizations to support during the crisis. We met online six days a week to pray for the city and study Scripture to find hope for ourselves and others. We also partnered to renovate a small storefront church in downtown Brooklyn, and began having weekly preview services on Sunday nights. Serving New York City in an hour of need became the purpose that held our church together.

LAUNCH

After two years of pre-launch work, Mission City officially opened on September 19, 2021. We continue to put down roots in New York City, serve our local communities with the words and actions of the gospel, and lift up the name and fame of Jesus together. You’re invited to write the next chapter of the story with us!

OUR CULTURE

  • Authenticity is our language.

We can’t be perfect, but we can always be honest. We let ourselves be known for who we really are, faults included, so God’s progress in our lives can be seen for what it really is.

  • Unity matters.

Conflict happens, but we follow a biblical process for resolving it. We treat interpersonal conflict like a God-given opportunity to build stronger relationships. We are a peace-making church, not a peace-faking one.

  • Community leads to growth.

We believe other Christians are one of God’s primary ways of providing us with counsel, care, challenge, encouragement, and growth. That’s why we aren’t a church that offers community groups—we’re a church made of them.

  • Worship is a way of life.

Worship is both an attitude and an action that goes beyond singing a few songs together on Sundays. We enjoy the presence of God whether we’re gathered in the church or scattered in the city.

  • Scripture is our guide.

The Bible is our encouragement in a world of hardship, our direction in a world of options, and our clarity in a world of confusion. We believe that following Scripture is always the quickest path to human flourishing.

  • Outreach is normal.

From relationship building to community service to sharing the central message of our faith, we look for chances to serve our neighbors in both word and action. Church isn’t a weekly meeting, it’s a constant mission.
